Deakin University’s Greg Barton says it’s extremely likely ASIO is talking about China in relation to a major foreign interference plot.
The foiled operation, led by a wealthy puppeteer, had deep links to a foreign government and aimed to bankroll vulnerable political candidates to get sympathetic MPs elected to parliament.
“It’s probably only Russia and China that have the means to this and probably only China with the actual interest,” Mr Barton told Sky News Australia.
“Australia’s not that important to Russia.”
