The Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI), founded in 2015 under the leadership of Deakin Distinguished Professor Fethi Mansouri, builds on two decades of foundational work by its predecessors. These include the Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ICG), the Alfred Deakin Research Institute (ADRI), the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation (CCG), and other research centres such as the Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights (CCHR) and the Strategic Research Centre (SRC) for Humanities and Social Sciences research.

These pioneering research units, some of the first established at Deakin University, have significantly contributed to ADI’s rich history. The institute’s recent formation has positioned it as a flagship for research priority areas. ADI remains the only humanities and social science research institute at Deakin University and is recognised as one of the leading institutes in Australia and internationally.

Throughout its history, ADI researchers have critically examined the evolving meanings and applications of citizenship, justice, and human rights. Their work spans both local contexts, including Indigenous communities, minorities, and other disadvantaged groups, and international contexts, focusing on the impact of globalising processes on local cultures, social relations, and political deliberations.

ADI brings together over 100 researchers, more than 100 doctoral students, and 100+ current partnerships across 15 countries. This extensive network collaborates on addressing significant issues affecting communities both locally and globally.
