Alfred Deakin Institute Oration 2024
On Monday 21 October 2024, the Alfred Deakin Institute held its annual Oration. The event was hosted by Deakin Distinguished Professor Liz Johnson (Acting Vice-Chancellor) and Deakin Distinguished Professor Fethi Mansouri at Deakin Downtown, Melbourne.
The Honourable Tony Burke MP addressed the evolving landscape of migration and multiculturalism, both domestically and internationally. He emphasised the need for strong institutional leadership to navigate the uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing international conflicts. The minister highlighted that the principles of mutual respect and equality, which are foundational to Australia’s multicultural policies, are essential for societal wellbeing and inclusivity.
The speech raised critical questions about the state of social cohesion in Australia, the impact of international crises on local polarisation, and the role of government in managing these tensions.
“The key ingredients that are referred to in the multicultural framework are to have deliberate government policy, to have investments that are targeted and sustained and, finally, to fight racism wherever it appears.”
Minister Burke’s reflections underscored the importance of political leadership in combating racism and fostering an inclusive society. He also pointed out the detrimental effects of disinformation, particularly regarding visas for Palestinians fleeing Gaza, on social cohesion.
The oration concluded with a message of hope, emphasising the need for collective efforts to combat extremism and the importance of voices of reason and compassion in guiding the way forward.
“Your story, your journey, your heritage and your future will become part of Australia’s story. It’s not a subgroup. It’s all part of it.”
