Deakin University staff who are ‘Eligible Employees’ and whose ‘Research Interests’ intersect with those of ADI may express interest in an Internal membership of ADI. Internal members possess an exceptional research track record relative to opportunity and actively participate in a vibrant, collaborative research environment.

With respect to applications for Internal membership, special consideration is given to Early Career Researchers (ECRs). In addition to meeting the minimum eligibility requirements, applicants for Internal membership who are ECRs will:

1. have an excellent publication track record relative to opportunity and in terms of ERA performance measure
2. make themselves available to informally mentor doctoral researchers
3. contribute to the research capacity and profile of the university in one or more of the following ways:
   • the development of competitive external grant proposals
   • primary or associate supervision of HDR candidates
   • other activities or achievements which the applicant can show will contribute to the research capacity and profile of the university to be determined by the Institute Research Committee.

In addition to meeting the standard eligibility requirements, applicants for Internal membership who are not ECRs will:

1. play a significant role in mentoring early career researchers and HDRs
2. have an excellent publication track record relative to opportunity and in terms of ERA performance measure
3. make themselves available to informally mentor ECRs and doctoral researchers
4. contribute in a sustained manner to the research capacity and profile of the Institute (the Faculty and University) in two or more of the following ways:
   1. be a chief investigator on at least one successful external grant in the previous three years
   2. have and maintain an exceptional publication track record relative to opportunity and in terms of ERA performance measures
   3. primary supervision of an HDR candidate to successful completion in the previous three years.

Research partners external to the University may apply for an External membership of ADI. External members will be (1) research partners external to the University whose research interests align with those of the Institute, (2) Honorary and Adjunct appointments within ADI, or (3) former Deakin University employees granted an Emeritus Professorship within ADI.

In order to be eligible for an External membership, applicants will:

1. have an exceptional international research profile, including an outstanding publication and grants track record
2. have research interests which align strategically with core foci of the Institute including one or more research streams
3. seek External membership to support ongoing collaborative research activities with existing ADI members
4. be nominated by at least one existing ADI Internal or External member.

When considering applications for External membership, the Institute will consider the strength of recent research activity and outputs, as well as the strategic alignment of the applicant’s research interests with the Institute.

Applicants for External membership must have a developed and ongoing collaborative research partnership with existing members of the Institute.

Research activity will be determined with reference to the accrual of research points in accordance with the Faculty of Arts and Education Academic Work Allocation Model (WAM).

The number of points required for research activity is staggered by level of employment. 

Research points are counted over the previous three years, regardless of the applicant’s place of employment in that time. Considerations will be made for applicants who were employed on part-time and fractional appointments during this three-year period.

In addition to meeting the minimum number of research points required, applicants must have points that come from 2 out of 3 of the following areas: (1) publications and/or creative outputs; (2) research income; and (3) HDR completions. This requirement does not apply to Level A and B academics, and academics who have joined Deakin in the past 24 months.

An indication of standard expectations by staff employment level is:

An early career researcher (ECR) is a researcher who is within five years of the start of their research career. This usually means the researcher was awarded a PhD within five years of the date of application. Extensions may be given owing to significant career interruption.

An Eligible Employee is an employee of Deakin University who holds a PhD and who is employed on either a fixed term or an ongoing basis at a fraction greater than .5 EFT (equivalent full time) that has an end-date no earlier than the calendar year in which the application is made.

An applicant must have research interests which align with one or more of the research streams of the Institute:
