Civil Religion and Democracy

Civil Religion and Democracy

This paper reconstructs an alternative tradition of thinking about the public utility of religion: the republican conception of civil religion, centred on an idea of public happiness and on an immanent idea of God as identical with Nature.

With Professor Miguel Vatter (Deakin University)

This paper reconstructs an alternative tradition of thinking about the public utility of religion: the republican conception of civil religion, centred on an idea of public happiness and on an immanent idea of God as identical with Nature. This paper suggests that by recovering the insights of civil religion modern democracies can hope to hold together faith and science.
