Liberalism and the ‘Crisis’ of International Order

The liberal international order has become the target of invigorated challenge, from right-wing populists in the transatlantic core and from increasingly powerful states in the order’s periphery. This paper argues that this fundamental contestation can be explained by the liberal underpinnings of the current international order which has impeded its responsiveness, delegitimized and silenced dissent, and frustrated reform initiatives.
