Until quite recently, most American politicians have continued to insist that their nation was still “exceptional” and the “leader of the free world”. The election of Donald Trump in 2016 and his presidency have punctured claims of “American exceptionalism”, possibly permanently. Joe Biden has talked about restoring America’s place in the world, just as Barack Obama did in 2008. International observers would prefer a Biden victory, in order to avoid another four years of Trump’s adverse impact on the world. This talk will examine what is at stake in the election, including the surreal prospect that Americans will re-elect Trump.
