Reparations as a Rightful Share? From Universalism to Redress in Distributive Justice

Reparations as a Rightful Share? From Universalism to Redress in Distributive Justice

A Seminar from the Politics and International Studies (Polis) Research Network at ADI.

With Dr Elise Klein, OAM (Australian National University)

The distribution of resources through an unconditional, universal mechanism, such as a universal basic income, recognises the common and shared origins of wealth – what James Ferguson has called a rightful share. Yet some groups have lost far more than others in the production apparatus linked to colonisation, slavery, and expropriation. In this paper, I examine these claims against calls for reparations and argue they are an important caveat to the universality of the rightful share thesis.
