Using Digital Methods in HASS Research

Using Digital Methods in HASS Research

Event Venue:

Deakin Downtown 727 Collins StreetDocklands, VIC, 3008, Australia ( Map )

About this Workshop

In partnership with the Australian Internet Observatory (AIO), this practical workshop is designed to equip HASS researchers with the skills to effectively source, visualise, and analyse digital data. This session demonstrates how integrating new digital tools into existing research workflows can enhance research design and add rigour to both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Led by the AIO, the workshop is structured into three distinct workshops of an hour each, with short breaks in between:

  • The Data Donation and Data Download Packages Framework will explore the AIO’s innovative data donation model and learn how it facilitates ethical research into public interactions with digital platforms. The session will also discuss the framework’s powerful applications within mixed-methods research designs.
  • Sourcing Data with AIRED provides a practical demonstration of sourcing and analysing social media data using the AIO’s research dashboard. Participants will learn more about how to navigate its datasets and apply its built-in tools for quick visualisation and analysis.
  • Generative AI in HASS research focuses on both practical and ethical applications. The workshop addresses the key technical requirements and constraints for using Generative AI in the Australian research context.

The workshops will be led by Deakin HASS Research and Training Manager, Dr Bogdan Mamaev, along with AIO Program Director, Dr Amanda Lawrence, from RMIT.

Additional Details

The workshop will be held in person at Deakin Downtown for Deakin researchers and online via Zoom for both Deakin and non-Deakin researchers.

Morning tea, lunch and networking opportunities will be provided for those attending in person.
