Message from the Acting Director | Winter 2024

Dear ADI friends, partners and colleagues,

I am delighted to highlight in particular our colleagues’ success in both category 2-4 funding schemes (industry and other government schemes) and commend everyone at the Institute as we continue our strong, upward trajectory to excel across many areas of the research enterprise and socio-scholarly impact.

Congratulations to ADI member Professor Yin Paradies for his recognition in the Cosmos Magazine list of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Leaders, which is a well-deserved acknowledgement of Yin’s excellence, passion and leadership in the field.

I am delighted to welcome three Deakin University Postdoctoral Research Fellows to the Institute: Dr Mia Martin Hobbs, Dr Michael Lazarus and Dr Christopher O’Neill. Details about these research fellows and their projects are detailed here.

We continue to celebrate the many excellent achievements of our ADI colleagues including multiple books published this quarter. These include A Toolkit for Effective Everyday Activism by Dr Leanne Kelly, La vita segreta delle iene by Dr Marcus Baynes Rock and Love Across Class by Dr Rose Butler.

I would also like to draw your attention to the ADI Policy Briefing Papers which are a series of accessible papers based on research at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation on topics related to contemporary social policy. Our latest one, ‘Disinformation in the City: Issues, Actors and Responses’ is out now.

As always, our colleagues continue to lead the way in relation to public dissemination and engagement with already well over 300 media appearances this year so far, spread across both national and international media outlets.

I invite you to attend our many upcoming events including our next policy forum on Thursday 8 August “The Future of Gaza: What Can Be Done?”, an ADI lunchtime seminar on Wednesday 21 August “Liminality and the Migration Experience” and ADI’s 2024 Conference: “Remaking Futures: Justice, Equality and Global Flourishing”.

As we navigate the second half of 2024, I look forward to the proactive engagement of our partners, stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally. It is these collaborative partnerships that allow us to sustain the excellence of our outputs and the impact of our engagement activities.

Sincerely,
Shahram Akbarzadeh (Acting Director, Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation)
