Enhancing Consumer Awareness of Privacy and the Internet of Things

Enhancing Consumer Awareness of Privacy and the Internet of Things

This study will investigate consumer awareness of privacy issues associated with the Internet of Things (IoT), specifically for devices that are used in domestic contexts.

The study comprises an extensive international literature review on the operation and regulation of consumer IoT devices, along with a survey, stakeholder interviews and focus groups with both users and non-users of IoT technologies. We aim to determine how consumers understand the privacy implications of IoT technologies, and to develop a series of privacy icons that can help raise consumer awareness at the point of sale. A reference group of leading international experts in privacy, technology and regulation is assisting with each phase of this project.

The operation of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network is made possible by funding provided by the Commonwealth of Australia under section 593 of theTelecommunications Act 1997. This funding is recovered from charges on telecommunications carriers.

This project will be undertaken in partnership with the Consumer Policy Research Centre (CPRC).

Research Funding

This project is funded by a grant from the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network.
